Our History
|
Established in 1924
The Gould Paper Corporation was founded in 1924 by Harry E. Gould, Sr., as a printing paper merchant, specializing in domestic and imported papers, primarily for the greeting card industry. |

1940's
By the 1940's, that business had grown to encompass commercial printing paper distribution and non-woven webs, which involved long-fiber technology, such as stencil paper, which was used to make stencils for mimeographs, and teabag paper, which led into many interesting and diverse markets.
In 1943, the first acquisition was made of another paper company, Reinhold Card & Paper, which traced its roots back to 1906.

1950's-1990's
Throughout the 1950's and the 1960's, Gould's business expanded through internal growth.
In 1969, Harry E. Gould, Jr. was appointed Chairman and CEO of Gould Paper.
With this appointment, the focus on growth was greatly increased. Gould concentrated on growing its business, both through acquisitions and internal growth. During this period, Gould acquired six paper merchants and established eight new divisions directed towards specific geographical or product markets.

In 1971, the company also made its first acquisition outside of the paper business, acquiring Ingalls Manufacturing, Inc. (Ceres, California), an agricultural equipment manufacturer, selling to the nut harvesting industry. During the 1970's, additional acquisitions for the agricultural group were Weiss Manufacturing, Inc., McNair Manufacturing, Inc., and Vrisimo Manufacturing, Inc., all located in Chico, California. In 1996, Gould also acquired one of its two main harvesting machine competitors, Ramacher Manufacturing, from FMC. Ramacher was located in Stockton, California, but was shortly moved to Chico, as well. These acquisitions gave Gould a complete line of harvesting and mowing equipment to further augment its penetration into this specialized agricultural market.
With revenue in the $600 million range, at the end of the 1990's, Gould was operating through nine divisions, all of which were located in the U.S. |
|
2000's
In early 2002, the company formed a new division, Gould North America, in Boston (Charlestown), Massachusetts. This division focuses on catalogs, magazine and newspaper publishers, as well as commercial printers throughout the United States.

In April 2002, Gould acquired WWF Paper Sales UK Limited, which is active in the sale of fine papers to the greeting card, magazine publishing, and book publishing industries. In February 2003, WWF acquired Salehurst Limited, a well-established paper broker in the U.K. This acquisition also gave WWF-UK its first operation outside of the U.K., Gallium E.U.R.L., which is headquartered in Paris. In March 2003, WWF also started a new division, WWF Paper & Board Limited, with former employees of MAP, the UK paper distribution operations of M-real, Europe's third largest paper manufacturer.
In September 2002, Gould announced the acquisition of Town Paper and its subsidiary, Paper Dynamix. Town Paper remains a distributor of mill "side-runs" and "start-up" tonnage. Town operates out of Gould's corporate office in New York. |

In August 2004, the company purchased Heller & Usdan, a New York paper
merchant.
In September 2004, Gould acquired Price & Pierce from M-real. Price &
Pierce was founded in 1869 as a trading company and had a long-standing listing
on the London Stock Exchange. Today, Price & Pierce has offices in Greenwich,
Connecticut, Helsinki, Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Auckland, Manila and other
locations throughout the Pacific region.

Today, Gould operates through 15 divisions located throughout the world. In
order to operate in such a geographically dispersed environment, Gould has
developed proprietary software to control and monitor all aspects of its
business.
Gould is both sales-oriented and customer-focused. It is
currently operating at a sales level in excess of $1 billion and has enjoyed
five consecutive years of record operating profits.

In October, 2006, Gould acquired Southern Paper, a leading paper merchant in the Miami, Florida, market. Southern Paper was founded in 1997 and has grown its sales and profits every year since inception. The track record has continued since joining Gould.
In November, 2006, Gould also acquired the western Canada operations of Cascades. PaperlinX had purchased all of Cascades’ distribution operations in Canada and was directed by the Canadian Competition Bureau to see western Canadian facilities located in Edmonton, Calgary, Alberta and Burnaby (Vancouver) British Columbia. These operations changed their identity to Gould Paper (Canada), Ltd. in June 2007. These operations continue to enjoy a significant market share in their territory.
